Tools of the Trade

While modern technology is no substitute for consultation with a caring veterinarian, there are many tools that we use to help us to diagnose and treat our patients.

We thought you might be interested in learning a little more about a few of the pieces of equipment we use every day to help our furry friends. Click on the photos for interesting images or sounds.

Digital X-ray machine

x_ray.jpgIn much the same way that digital cameras have revolutionized photography, digital technology has changed the face of radiology! We can now get better quality X-rays and use less radiation at the same time.  Instead of a traditional cassette with X-ray film, there is a sensor to detect X-rays and convert them into diagnostic images almost immediately.  We don’t even need a dark room or film developing chemicals anymore. Additionally, the X-rays can be copied onto a CD or e-mailed to a specialist.

Ultrasound

ultrasound.jpgUltrasound uses the reflection of sound waves from the tissues of the body to generate images. This lets us look at the internal structure of organs in the abdomen or to get a detailed analysis of heart function. Of course it is also a great way to evaluate pregnancy in dogs & cats.

Stethoscope

stethoscope.jpgThis is an essential tool and a part of every physical exam. We can tell a great deal about the heart and lungs from how they sound. Click here to hear a normal heart. Clicking on the stethoscope will open a page with soundtracks recorded from a stethoscope.

Anesthetic Monitors

Safety is always our top priority with any anesthesia. We use the latest technology to monitor our patient’s vital signs and keep them safe. We can use these monitors to painlessly monitor heart rhythm, oxygen levels, carbon dioxide levels, body temperature, blood pressure and more.

Med_rx.jpgRigid Endoscope

This tool allows us to look in tight places and display the image on a video screen. It works especially well for ear exams, deep ear cleanings, and nasal exams.

Digital Dental radiograph machine

This works in the same way as the digital x-ray machine, except there is a small sensor that we place in the mouth instead of a dental film. This allows us to get a detailed look at the entire tooth. Much of the dental disease in dogs and cats occurs below the gum line!

microscope.jpgMicroscope

A microscope provides up to 1000 fold magnification so that we can take a detailed look at all kinds of things including blood cells, skin scrapes, ear smears, urine samples, and much more.
